We’ve added the a new Box on Gmail’s navigation bar to serve as GTDInbox’s “home” within Gmail. There are a few glitches with it and the design is lacking in places, but I wanted to show you where we’re heading. I expect we will add ‘Recent Contacts’ and ‘Recent Threads’ to this too.
Get over to http://www.gtdinbox.com/3/ now to install GTDInbox 3.0 Alpha 7.
In the next release, expect a more refined Box and some visual tweaks that Pete is doing!

Oh, I think it should also support FF3.5b99 as I know quite a few people requested this. Let me know if it doesn’t!

Tried it
Wowwwww ! Nice one !
Still can not have my “personalized” status in the right order, and still do not have personalized categories, but this version looks so nice
Question for you : what is the “project view” ? do you plan to integrate a kind of “hierarchical” tasks ?
(and sync with my mobile phone agenda / tasks
)
If so, i can not wait for it
It was part of the few things missing in gtd for me
if not, what’s that stuff about then ?
I like your work, please go on !!!

@riddim,
Do you mean on the new Box?
It’s supposed to pop out with your Project labels (neatly shown as folders), but it’s a little glitchy. I’ll get that fixed next!
You can already do hierarchial labels. Just use forward slashes. So, P/GTDInbox/Ideas ->
Projects
-> GTDInbox
->-> Ideas
Is that what you thought it was for? If not then do share your thoughts!
riddim Says:

by hierarchical tasks (and not labels… These are also damn’ useful !), i meant :
eg - I have task A and task B
B task depends on the result of task A… So I can not start to achieve task B until I have the correct result of task A.
At the present moment, i can not “link” 2 tasks together and can not say which one to start (except playing with status)
Did i share correctly ? Yes i know, i will post that in the dedicated forum !
OK, i have understood the “project” view (for labels)… I would have done it with “contexts” more than projects… Still, maybe you can make it for both of them
Good job mate !
Andy Says:
June 16th, 2009 at 11:26 am
Riddim -
Got it! Contexts should appear near Projects (if you have context labels?). You just need to click the down-arrow expander to see them.
Ok, I understand the tasks request and it makes sense. Doing _something_ with this is planned; although the exact form is not yet decided. It could be linking emails together; it could be have a sub-task list within an email. In either case, “soon” is all I can say

THAT’s the ticket! Everything’s showing now, and I love the look of the new box - just need to test it out for usefulness now!

This morning, Alpha 6 wasn’t loading - so I downloaded Alpha 7, and that little box is nice! I’m getting used to the new interface - it’s really helpful, but some things are odd. Why are my projects all “misc”? Is there something on the settings page that would change that?
Daniel Says:
June 17th, 2009 at 8:25 am
Hey! Where’s the settings page gone?
Daniel Says:
June 17th, 2009 at 8:27 am
While I’m at it, what’s the difference between the status “Next” and the status “action”?
Andy Says:
June 17th, 2009 at 9:04 am
Hi Daniel,
I’m not sure why things are in Misc - it will be a Preference thing I suspect (right now, it’s defaulted to P/ for projects). But the Preferences does not exist yet (it will soon).
As for Next and Action; Next is a subset of Actions (and it’s not recommended for everyone), kind of like a priority. So you always know what is to be done next.

More weirdness - working with the dashboard in Alpha 7, I opened an item in Gmail (from the little open in Gmail text link in the upper righthand side) - and the result was that the theme changed, and the page that was opened was not the item, but the previous page I was on in Gmail (settings), and all graphics were missing (like the magnifying glass and trashcan icons from GTDInbox, and the Gmail logo).
Daniel Says:
June 17th, 2009 at 9:13 am
Reload of the inbox brought me back the icons and the logo, but now the nifty box on the left hand side to get to the dashboard is gone!
Wibbler Says:
June 17th, 2009 at 10:05 am
Yeah, that “open in Gmail” thing is screwy for me - the page went blank, but a close/open of the entire Firefox tab sorted it fully.
Daniel Says:
June 17th, 2009 at 10:14 am
@Andy - I was using P: not P/ - now that’s sorted out. But the dashboard is gone. Restarting FF didn’t work. I haven’t tried restarting the ‘puter - there is other work to be done!

It would be helpful, as I have pointed out before, to have screen shots (large enough so that the details can be read, with pointers to important features) of how each version should look, and a rudimentary manual as well, otherwise it is hard to know if I am seeing what others see, or what you want. But alpha7 does load (ff3.5b99), and I can see a number of features, though many obvious things are missing: an easy way to set labels beyond Gmail’s dropdown lists, for example.

Seems to work also with Firefox 3.5 (release candidate), though the GTDInbox add on has to be “made compatible” using the Nightly Tester Tools add on.

Still no Dashboard box on left - FF shows an empty element upon source examination. (still in FF 3.0.11).
Feature request: in the individual item dashboard view (reached from the magnifying glass icon on the right) - it would be great to have a Dashboard button up top, like the “back” button in the individual view that is reached from the full dashboard (that I can’t reach anymore!). I was just getting the hang of the dashboard!
Daniel Says:

Talk about weirdness!
My previous problem was connected with messing with “themes” in the settings page - as if I have nothing to do!
After my last post here (sorry to take up so much space), I noticed that I now had a “compose personal” link above the “Contacts” link on the left side panel. I tried switching to “older version”, then back to “newer version” - and VOILA! the dashboard box reappeared - now ABOVE the labels box.
Whether it was you or whether it was code confusion - Thanks!
Daniel Says:

Regarding which, I noticed that the address should be https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=2#inbox - notice “ui=2″ - when ui=1, the dashboard box is blank.
I’m not a coder, but I hope that is actionable information.
Andy Says:
June 17th, 2009 at 11:41 am
Daniel
Thanks for all the input!
The ui=1/ui=2 thing… GTDInbox is designed to only work with Gmail 2 (ui = 2), so that is expected. It won’t work with ui=1 (aka ‘older version’).
As for the Themes, can you remember what Theme you activated?
Daniel Says:
June 17th, 2009 at 11:44 am
Themes - I messed around. Tried “terminal” tried “minimal” tried to make my own. Tried “desk” and probably a couple more. when I set it back to “classic” it apparently went to ui=1. I set it to “default” and it was still bad.
Daniel Says:
June 17th, 2009 at 11:48 am
My problem might be the Gmail manager addon, or Gina Trapani’s Better Gmail2 addon. When I click the Gmail manager icon, the address is https://mail.google.com/mail/?shva=1#inbox. And the stuff on the left doesn’t load, as expected. I have some labs features enabled that might be interfering, too. Or at least they double the features of those two addons.
Jason Says:

I want to say that you are doing a great job. New interface looks really good on my desktop and I can get through my email much faster than with the older version. However, I wanted to point out that on my Netbook with limited screen real estate, I prefer the old version with small text quick label selectors at the top of the email.
Also, with the settings that are coming, will there be an option again to set projects as inline on the quick labels?
Daniel Says:
June 17th, 2009 at 4:20 pm
More - labels don’t seem to stick! When I assign them in the dashboard view or in the GTDInbox frame above the body of the email, they don’t show up in the inbox view.
Assigning them via the Gmail pulldown box works fine.

Hello,
Mine will look insignificant under the weight of Daniel’s investigations - but today, GTDInbox stopped loading at all for me!
Gary Says:
June 18th, 2009 at 10:52 pm
Just loaded alpha 7 (late to the party), the settings tab appears to be gone. Is that intentional?
Wibbler Says:
June 19th, 2009 at 8:11 am
So, a bit more info you you (on FF 3.0.11):
Windows Vista: works fine.
Windows XP: Initially worked fine (for 2 days). Now only “GTDInbox Flow Blog” (and other web links) show in box on left hand side (i.e. Dashboard part is gone). No sign of GTDInbox mods when looking at an email. Status/Project label groupings still work (and always have done throughout the Alpha phase for me).
Daniel Says:
June 19th, 2009 at 11:00 am
@Wibbler - @Andy pointed out above that the GTDInbox only works with ui=2 in the address line, so the workaround for this one is to manually type the numeral 2 in place of the default 1 in the address bar -
eg. https://mail.google.com/mail/?shva=1#inbox or http://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=1#inbox
becomes
https://mail.google.com/mail/?shva=2#inbox or http://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=2#inbox.
After you type the address, press enter and you should be fine.
Wibbler Says:
June 19th, 2009 at 3:55 pm
And now (no reboot, just hibernation on XP and restart of Firefox) it’s all working again!

Having installed it OK with FF 3.5 release candidate US English edition at home - at work installing it on the UK English version of FF and it is not compatible - I assume it is a problem with the English UK FF?
David Andrew Says:

No reinstalled the US English edition of FF 3.5 - still incompatible on my work machine!
Ahmad Says:

Did you remove the ability to label emails as you compose them?
Andy Says:
June 23rd, 2009 at 5:46 pm
Ahmad - the Compose emails has been temporarily removed, but it will return!
The same is true of Settings/Preferences. They are moving into the proper Firefox Preferences system.
David - Firefox 3.5 has been updated since Alpha 7, so GTDInbox is no longer compatible. Will fix in the new push.

I like a few of the new features, but there are a couple of things that I hope can change:
The amount of space that is now taken up at the top of a conversation is over the top, it was fine before, but now 3 large rows of buttons have appeared, not too keen on this!
Also (as I think others have mentioned above) my custom sidebar order keeps getting reset when GTDInbox is enabled.
I hope these things can be fixed (or in the case of the conversation buttons, perhaps an option could be added?).
